Yelp Review

Geneyem B. - 5 star
"I love this dentist. They are so good and gentle. My whole family goes here and my girls (who are 7 and 5) love it here. They know our names, there's never a long wait, and they are gentle with our treatments. Dr. Marin is a very good dentist. He explains everything thoroughly and my girls trust him while he does their treatment. I would recommend this dentist too anyone who is looking for one."

This week, a patient came into my office worried about an aching upper right molar. The pain
had been there for four days, and she was convinced it was a cavity.
Normally, if a cavity is causing continuous pain, it shows up clearly on X-rays. But in her case,
everything looked perfectly normal. Her teeth were healthy, her gums looked great—no sign of
trouble.

So what was going on?

When a Toothache Isn’t a Toothache

When teeth look fine but pain persists, we expand the exam beyond the teeth. That means
checking the surrounding tissues and muscles.
Sure enough, when I pressed on one of her jaw muscles, she winced. The pain she felt shot
straight to her molar. What she thought was a cavity was actually muscle pain—a very common
scenario.

I often see toothaches that turn out to be caused by sinus infections, muscle strain, or even
something as simple as a cold sore.

The Role of Stress in Muscle Pain

Muscle strain often happens when muscles are overworked or tightened beyond their threshold.
When that happens, pain radiates outward to neighboring areas like teeth, temples, or eyes.
And what’s the most common trigger? Stress.
Patients with certain risk factors—like a poor bite, bad posture, or past injuries—are more
vulnerable. But add a stressful event (exams, weddings, family struggles, overwork), and
suddenly their bodies cross the tipping point.

Treating More Than Just Teeth

As dentists, we can provide solutions like protective night guards or bite alignment when
needed. But for lasting relief, patients often need to address lifestyle balance, too.
Some powerful (and simple) strategies include:

● Moving your body with regular physical activity.
● Prioritizing high-quality sleep.
● Building positive social connections.
● Spending time outdoors to reset your nervous system.

Even carving out just 20 minutes for a walk in nature can do wonders—and it’s far easier than
spending hours in a doctor’s office later.

Pain Is a Signal

Your body is always working toward balance—a state we call homeostasis. Pain is the body’s
way of telling you something is off.
Often, it’s the muscles that tighten, pulling your frame out of alignment and causing fatigue and
discomfort. Paying attention to these signals early can help prevent bigger problems later.

The Takeaway

A toothache isn’t always caused by a cavity. Sometimes, it’s a red flag from your body to slow
down and rebalance your life. Finding activities that restore you—whether it’s exercise, sleep,
hobbies, or connecting with loved ones—can make all the difference.

But one final note:

If you ever experience a toothache, always get it checked by a dentist first.
Dental problems should be ruled out before assuming it’s stress or muscle-related. Once we
know your teeth are healthy, we can explore other causes together—and often, that path leads
to positive lifestyle changes.
